Travelling To Aberfoyle, and around The Trossachs Villages

Less than 90 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow, Aberfoyle, gateway to The Trossachs, offering something for everyone, is waiting to welcome you while you visit or holiday in this most scenic part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park!

There are many ways to travel here, whether you want to come on a tour, use public transport or travel independently walking, cycling or by car.

The following information will help you plan the best way for you to arrive at Aberfoyle, and suggestions for travelling through the area so that you might enjoy the best of The Trossachs.

Should you need to be collected at the airport or station, to travel locally or even go on a guided tour further afield, the local taxi services will provide a professional, reliable and personal service. They are Crescent Cabs and the Trossachs Cab Co .

Walking Routes
Aberfoyle is on the long distance walking route, the Rob Roy Way between Drymen and Callander, and can easily be reached from the West Highland Way, by walking through Strathard, either from Inversnaid or over the shoulder of Ben Lomond from Rowardennan. From either of these routes you can walk through Loch Ard Forest, part of Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.

Cycling Routes
National Cycle Route 7 Lochs and Glens North (Glasgow to Inverness) passes through Aberfoyle and Gartmore. Other Trossachs villages of Kinlochard and Stronachlacher, Loch Katrine and Brig o Turk, may be reach easily by cycling on traffic free forestry roads or quiet country roads.

By Bus

Two Trossachs companies provide local bus services between Kinlochard, Aberfoyle, Port of Menteith and Callander - the Strathard Sprinter (Time Table) during the day, and Addison's Bus (Timetable) in the evenings. NB neither operate on Sundays

The Trossachs Trundler (30 June - 12 October)(Timetable) provides a summer service linking the Trossachs villages of Callander and Aberfoyle. The bus stops at Brig o’Turk, from where you can explore the Woodland Trust’s Glen Finglas Estate. It also calls at Loch Katrine pier then climbs over the spectacular Duke’s Pass calling at the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park Visitor Centre before descending into Aberfoyle.

There are public service buses from Edinburgh, Perth and Inverness via Stirling,and from Glasgow via Balfron. Reach Aberfoyle from Fort William, Oban and other west coast towns via Callander by CityLink then use local bus services.

Several companies run small bus tours from both Edinburgh and Glasgow to The Trossachs, eg Timberbrush and Haggis Tours, while you can travel by coach from many locations in England with accommodation included.

By Train
to Stirling (nearest to Aberfoyle) or Glasgow Queen Street or Central Stations.
After arriving at either town you can travel to Aberfoyle or other Trossachs villages by bus, or by taxi.

By Car
Aberfoyle, the gateway to the spectacular scenery of The Trossachs is easily accessible from Edinburgh (M9) and Glasgow (A81) and their airports.

Motorway (M9, M8) routes are a short distance away which means that you can reach Aberfoyle and The Trossachs without difficulty from many parts of the UK.

If you are coming from further north, Aberfoyle is a short drive from both A84 through Callander and A82 on west Loch Lomond.

By Air
The nearest airports are Glasgow International and Edinburgh. Glasgow Preswick is further away south west of Glasgow on the coast. There are many airlines which fly nationally to these airtports and many budget airlines fly in from continental capitals. Increasingly there are transatlantic flights from US and Canadian hubs which mean that Heathrow and Gatwick can be avoided!
